We’re going whale watching with kids in Hervey Bay

From mid July until October each year, Hervey Bay is a regular stop for the humpback whales’ annual migration south. Sheltered by Fraser Island, the waters are calm and safe and the humpbacks and their calves can rest, play and socialise safely. Cue whale watching! Who could ask for a more beautiful spot to watch these beautiful, playful, curious giants of the sea?

Since moving to Hervey Bay, one whale season has been and gone and we missed it. We had 3 kids aged 5 and under last whale season and were unsure of how the kids would fare on a half day whale watching adventure. We struggled to keep them content on a 30 minute drive so couldn’t fathom what a 1 hour ride to where the whales play would do to them, let along the other passengers.

This year however, we ARE going to watch the humpback whales play in the waters of the Great Sandy Strait. There are several whale watching operators who provide a large range of options so there is something for everyone including half day, full day tours and combination whale watching and World Heritage Listed Fraser Island tours.

For our much anticipated first time meeting the humpback whales, we’ve chosen a half day package with Tasman Venture who boast 23 years experience with whale watching tours. We’re going with the half day tour which runs for 4 hours (8.30am or 1.30pm departures), morning / afternoon tea, activities and toys to keep the kids occupied and the deal clincher….underwater glass windows inside the luxurious cabin. No more worrying about Master 2 jumping in after a humpback!

And when you’re not whale watching, check out the 20 other awesome things you can do on the Fraser Coast with kids here.

I look forward to sharing my pics and tour with you soon! Feel free to share yours with us @ kidskonciergehb
